Buying Guide - Best Kitchen Chimney in India

What is a Kitchen Chimney, and why should we buy a Kitchen chimney?

A kitchen chimney not only cleans the kitchen air but also gives a premium look to your kitchen. It has a series of filters, and we also refer to it as a kitchen hood, exhaust hood, or range hood. It has a grease filter, which will trap the oil grease and oil fumes. Later it passes these through the charcoal filter. The charcoal filter will absorb the smoke, heat as well as foul odours. Finally, it will circulate the fresh air back to the kitchen and releases the smoke through the duct. Kitchen Chimney also uses either a mesh or baffle filter to observe the oil grease.

The concept of installing a chimney inside the kitchen is not new. You have already seen a long brick chimney coming out of the roof in many old houses. You can also find the traditional chimney inside the living room fireplace.

Factors to Consider before buying a kitchen chimney

‣ Types of Kitchen Chimney

Based on the working principle, a kitchen chimney is mainly a Ducting chimney or a Ductless Chimney

A ducting chimney, also called an extracting chimney, sucks the air inside the kitchen. Later it passes air through various filters and mesh to absorb the oil and grease. Finally, it releases the air outside the kitchen through a ducting pipe or PVC outlet. These are most common in Indian houses and are highly efficient. They capture smoke, dust, and oil fumes very efficiently. The only issue with them is that they require expert installation.

While a ductless chimney, also known as reducing chimneys, will collect the impure air, and after processing, it will release the clean air inside the kitchen. They are easy to install and cheaper than ducting chimneys.

4. Straight-line kitchen chimney – These kitchen chimneys are very popular where space is a constraint.

The mounting of this chimney will smartly use the available space. These are not visible from the outside and are suitable for those who don’t want to showcase chimneys.

5. Auto Clean Chimney – An auto clean chimney require the least maintenance. It has a separate oil collector to collect oil particles. There is an auto clean button that will clean the chimney with a button push. You only need to clean your chimney every six months, not regularly.

‣ Size of Kitchen Chimney

The kitchen chimney should be appropriate to the stove’s size to observe all the smoke and oils from the kitchen. This Chimney Buying Guide will help you to understand the perfect size for your kitchen. The ideal length of a kitchen chimney is either 60cm or 90cm. A 60cm kitchen chimney is suitable for 2-4 stoves, while 90cm is perfect for 3-5 stoves.

You should select the chimney slightly larger than the stove’s size so that it can effectively consume most of the smoke. But also, it should not be more significant than the usual size. Because it will unnecessarily consume more power as well as disturbs the decor of your kitchen. While If you choose a smaller size, it will not absorb enough smoke and oil from the cooking.

Apart from the chimney’s size, you should also maintain a standard distance between the chimney and the cooktop. Ideally, there should be a 26-30 inch distance between the cooktop and the chimney. If you reduce from 26 inches, there may be chances of catching fire, while more than 30 inches will not effectively absorb gases and smoke.

‣ Chimney Suction power

To select the best suction power kitchen chimney, you should take the help of the below formula.

The volume of the kitchen (Length x Width x Height) x 10 (number of times chimney should eliminate the volume of air)

For example – Suppose your kitchen has a dimension of 5m x 4m x 3m, then what should be the chimney’s ideal suction power.

The volume of Kitchen = 5x4x3 m = 60 metre

Effective Suction power = Volume of Kitchen x 10 = 60×10 = 600 m³/hr.

Here the minimum suction power should be more than 600 m³/hr. A chimney with a higher suction power is always beneficial.

Apart from volume, other factors such as the ventilation, distance between chimney & stoves, cooking types, etc., are also affecting the chimney suction power. In general, Indian kitchens have a volume range from 400 – 700 cubic meters. Considering all the above factors, any chimney with a suction power of 700 to 1100 m³/hr is perfect for an Indian kitchen. Also, it should keep in mind that a higher suction power motor will produce more noise.

Tips –

  • Regularly clean the filter, and the oil collector will help the chimney absorb more smoke and gases.
  • If you select a chimney with a Baffle filter, the suction power is not affected by grease or oil stuck on the filter.

‣ Noise level

Kitchen Chimneys do make some amount of noise while clearing fumes and gases from the kitchen. Chimney noise level depends upon its speed and suction power. The noise level generally ranges from 50 dB to 75 dB and directly depends on chimney suction power. The noise will be lesser at a lower speed while it increases with increasing speed. Usually, expensive chimneys produce lesser noise than a cheaper chimney, even from the same brand. A kitchen chimney with a noise level of 55dB will make comparatively lesser noise. Our typical conversation is about 55-60 dB, while a lawnmower is about 90 dB, and a loud rock concert is about 120 dB. Any sound below 70 dB is generally considered safe for the human ear.

‣ Types of Kitchen Chimney Filters

Cassette filters or Mesh filters

Cassette filters have multiple layers of aluminium or stainless steel mesh filters in which there are tiny holes. These filters trap the solid, oil as well as grease inside it and allow smoke to escape. These grease and Oil particles slowly clogged inside the mesh filter and, in the long run, affect the suction power of the chimney.

You need to clean these filters regularly for optimum performance. You can clean these filters either at home or with any professional cleaner.

Please refer to this guide to clean the kitchen chimney.

Baffle Filter

This filter is more efficient than the mesh filters. It has multiple curve layered structures of steel and aluminium. When the smoke and fumes pass through these curves, the filter will drag these heavy particles. These filters are most suitable for Indian kitchens where we are using deep frying as well as grilling.

These chimneys are easier to maintain as well as clean. You only need to clean it once in 4-6 months. These chimneys’ suction power is not affected even though the first layer observe all the oil.

Carbon filter / Charcoal Filter

Carbon filters are made of charcoal and are used to remove foul odour from the chimney. We use these filters in water purifiers to clean the water. You can use this filter in both ducts as well as ductless chimneys. These filters remove the odour but accumulate oil and greasy particles, so you need to replace these filters after some time, usually in 4-6 months.

These filters are optional and used together with either baffle or cassette filters to remove odour.

Note – Among all these filters, the most essential and helpful filter for Indian cooking is Baffle Filter. It is ideal for deep frying and grilling. These filters require very little maintenance as well as easy to clean. A chimney with a baffle filter and a charcoal filter is considered the best kitchen chimney in India.

‣ Kitchen Chimney Design

Nowadays, in the market, there are different designs of kitchen chimneys available. You should always choose the best design that will adjust to your kitchen and enhance its kitchen decor. Usually, the standard designs are curved glass, pyramid, straight glass, box type, straight line, and an angular chimney.

Curved Glass Chimneys – This is one of the most popular designs for the chimney. It makes less noise and has separate outdoor and indoor units. It is perfect for both small as well as a large kitchen.

Angular Chimneys are also perfect for the Indian cooking style and expel more smoke and grease. These look very stylish and give an elegant look to the kitchen. These chimneys come with excellent suction power along with high efficiency.

Pyramid Chimneys – These chimneys have an integrated baffle filter. It will require less maintenance and also consumes less power.

Box Type Chimneys – It uses high-quality glass and steel in these chimneys. There are LED focus lighting for proper illumination. These chimneys are also called ceiling-mounted chimneys.

‣ Auto Clean Feature in Kitchen Chimney

These chimneys require less maintenance and cleaning. Here the oil molecules are isolated by the chimney filters and collected in a separate compartment. Due to which it will improve the suction power of the chimney.

Generally, auto cleaning chimneys come with an Aluminum non-stick turbine blower through which the cooking fumes pass. Due to the pressure, the oil particles stick on the blower wall. Later these are collected in the washable collector. You only need to wash the oil collector once a month. You only need to push the auto clean button in the chimney while cooking. The auto clean chimney is the best kitchen chimney in India with less maintenance.

‣ Filterless or Filtered Chimney, which is right?

With the advancement of technology, our chimney also becomes advanced day by day. Filterless Chimney is the next generation of Auto-clean Chimney and uses advanced technology to remove oily particles without filtering. In these chimneys, there will be a vertical multi-blade fan running inside the kitchen chimney. Whenever the hot air and oily particles pass through this multi-blade fan, it collects the oil. During rotation, due to centrifugal force, it will spray the air over the chimney’s anti-stick walls, and upon heating, it will collect the oil in the oil collector.

While in the filtered chimney, there is a filter above the regular exhaust fan. The most common filter is the baffle filter. In it, the oil fumes and grease are stuck into the chimney and pass through the filter.

The filter will collect the oil from fumes, and later it is stored inside the oil collector. After that, you can remove the oil collectors and easily clean them reattach them inside the chimney.

The only issue with the filtered chimney is that you need to clean it regularly; otherwise, the filter will get clogged, reducing the chimney suction power. However, you can buy an auto-clean filtered chimney, which will clean by itself with a push button. But it will also require cleaning but not frequently like an ordinary chimney.

The filterless chimney will require lesser maintenance and are more durable than a filtered kitchen chimney. Whenever possible, we should prefer a filterless auto-clean chimney.

How to Clean kitchen chimney?

In India, we use many spices and oil in our cooking, which results in greasy smoke. This greasy smoke and oil fumes will stick on kitchen walls, cabinets. You can easily observe stickiness on your appliances like fridgeswashing machinesAir conditionerscoolers, fans, etc. This stickiness is mainly due to the oil fumes generated while cooking. To overcome these situations, you should install the best chimney in India inside your kitchen.

The Kitchen chimney keeps our kitchen smoke, gases as well as oil & grease-free. But after some time, the oil and grease accumulated inside the filter, decreasing the chimney’s suction power.

It is our responsibility to clean the kitchen chimney regularly. If you are not cleaning the chimney for a long time, the grease/ oil and smoke stuck inside the filter will start giving a lousy odor. It also affects the absorption capacity sometimes.

The cleaning of the chimney also depends on its type. If you are buying an Auto Clean chimney, you can clean it by pushing a button.

Baking soda is very good at cleaning kitchen filters; I use baking soda to clean my greasy filters. You can mix some vinegar and salt for better results.

  • Take a bucket of boiling water and put two tablespoons of baking soda and 2 cups vinegar, and 1-2 spoon of salt into the water.
  • Now immerse the filters into it and leave it for 1-2 hours.

FAQ – Best Kitchen Chimney in India

How does Kitchen Chimney work?

Usually, A Kitchen chimney has three main components one capture Filter/ panel, a second oil collector, and a fan or blower for ventilation. When we turn on the kitchen chimney, it sucks oil, harmful gases, smoke, steam, food odor, etc., formed while cooking. If your chimney has one, the oil and grease get trapped in either a mesh filter or an oil collector (if your chimney has one). If there is a carbon filter, it will trap all the foul odors from food and smoke. Finally, the smoke, gases, and steam are exhausted out of the kitchen through a duct.

Can we use an exhaust fan instead of a kitchen chimney?

An exhaust fan is necessary for proper ventilation in the kitchen, but it can only remove its smoke. It will clean oil and grease fumes, harmful gases, heat, and foul odors from the kitchen. A kitchen chimney can sense the toxic gas leakage, traps the oils and grease. It maintains the fresh air in the kitchen and keeps your kitchen always clean as well as healthy.

Can we use both the chimney and exhaust fan together?

No, please do not use both the exhaust fan and chimney together. It will create fluctuating air pressure inside the kitchen so that chimney’s suction power will get impacted.

Can we install a chimney in an open kitchen?

Yes, you can install a chimney in both open as well as in a closed kitchen. The only constraint you need is to install a higher suction power chimney in an open kitchen. It would be best to install a kitchen chimney with 1200 m3/hr suction power in an open kitchen.

Is the kitchen chimney consuming more power?

Depends; while cooking, a chimney can consume around 150-200 watt power. Overall, a chimney can consume a maximum of 300-400 watts of power if all parts are running together. The chimney’s auto-clean function can consume 100-150 watts, but this function is not running while cooking. For an average time, it is consuming only 150-200 watts depending on the speed selection.

  1. Hello sir.. I am willing to but a chimney hence came across your blog. The blog is really useful but I need 1 opinion from you. Can you tell me is wonderchef’s chimney good for Indian kitchen? In every sense like working, durability , customer support etc

    1. Hi Ahana, Wonderchef chimney is also good, but you may also get some better varieties and brands in the Indian market. For Indian kitchen Faber, Hindware and Elica are the better choices. They have a wide range of variety as well as excellent after-sale support.

  2. Dr D Ashok Kumar

    Dear Gaurav Ji,
While browsing for the best chimney online I have fortunately come across your article and I have found it very helpful and informative; it has really educated me about the chimney. Thank you very much for writing such a great article on the subject.
Right now I am constructing a house for my own residence and the size of the kitchen is 3m width x 3.5m Length x 3.7m height and we are going to use a 4 burner stove. Can you please suggest the best chimney model? I see a lot many ads of KAFF; what do you think about this brand? Which brands gives us the free or charged installation provision? Will it be good to buy it online or shall I buy it from a store?
I prefer a 90cm, angular with auto clean facility. Can we anticipate any issues with angular chimneys?
I will be obliged if you can answer my queries at the earliest.

    1. Thank You, Ashok Ji, for vising our website.

As per our suggestion for your kitchen, you should buy a chimney with a size of 90cm which is ideal for 4 burner stove. Also considering the kitchen size it is good to have a chimney with a power 1000 m3/hr or more. It has 2-3 speed setting in the chimney so that you can run on lower speed when needed.
Almost all good brands like (Hindware, Kaff, Faber, Eurodomo, Elica) are proving good chimneys but if they have a local service centre then it is good.
As per my knowledge, I haven’t seen any brand giving free installation. Both online and offline you will get the same products and services from the brand. But sometime while buying online you may get attractive offers and on a cheaper price than offline.
Angular chimneys are more attractive and have excellent suction power. They are very good but you may need to pay more for Angular chimney. If you are planning to buy angular chimney then you should check Faber or Elica. They have a good range of angular chimney and their reviews are very good.

Hope this answers your query, please let us know if you need any more information.

      Regards,
      Gaurav

      1. Dear Gaurav ji,
I am glad to receive an early reply from you..thank you very much. It had certainly clarified my confusion.
In your article you have said that the chimney with baffle filters should be preferred but some models feature “filter less technology “ and I am confused with this. Which one is advanced and better…a chimney with baffle filters (or) a chimney with filter less technology.
        Kindly clarify the same.
        Regards.

        1. Hello Ashok ji,
Filterless Chimney is the next generation of Auto-clean Chimney. It will require lesser maintenance and are more durable than a filtered chimney. I have updated about this this technology in details please refer to that section above in this article. As per suggestion, we should buy filterless auto clean chimney.

          1. Thank you very much, dear Gaurav ji, for being kind in answering my questions and clarifying my doubts…I am greatly helped.

    1. Thank you, Sir, for vising our website.
While buying a kitchen chimney the most fundamental requirement is its size and suction power. As I understand your kitchen size is 10x10x10 cubic ft. Then any chimney with 800 – 1200m3/h is more than sufficient.
Higher suction power will remove more smoke but it will make more noise and costs more on the electricity bill.
Any chimney has 2-3 speed settings, on a lower speed, the suction is less while on higher speed suction is more.
Also for 4 burner stove choose the size of a 90cm while for 2 burner stove choose 60cm chimney.

  5. Very well researched and systematically written article on electric chimneys. After reading it thoroughly, my all doubts are clear. Now I have to only decide the brand and model to purchase. There is a request that you have not told anything about noise of electric chimney and I am very afraid of that can you please give your valuable suggestions for that. Thanks.

    1. Thank you, Radha. It is well known that a kitchen chimney will make noise while clearing the fumes from the kitchen. The noise level generally ranges from 50 dB to 75 dB and directly depends on chimney suction power. Noise will be low at lower speed and increases at the maximum speed. As per our recommendation if you buy any chimney below 55 dB will produce comparatively lesser noise. Our normal conversation is about 55 dB and below 70 dB is generally considered safe.
Hope this try to solve your confusion.
